Faith comes by hearing.
What we hear determines the level and condition of our faith.
When we hear God’s truth, our faith is strengthened. When we hear voices of fear and doubt, we become weak in faith.
What have you been hearing?
Some social media can make us feel as if we are not doing as well as others and we hear voices that tell us that ‘We are not good enough’. A lot of news that we hear from TV or read from the newspapers can convey voices of anxiety through the incessant reports of trouble and violence. Self-talk is another major source of voice that we hear daily. We can unknowingly allow voices of negativity and fears from the past continuously speak to our spiritual ears that destroys our faith. Self – talk often magnify our problems and diminishes our strength.
For example, after years of being slaves in Egypt, when faced with the Canaanites in the Promised Land, the Israelites convinced themselves to be ‘grasshoppers’ in comparison to the ‘giants’ of the land. The voices of their slave-masters continued to intimidate them even after they were freed and they could not enter the Promised Land through unbelief.
Our faith can be very weak if we only hear the voices of doubt and negativity. If we have been raised in poor conditions, the voices of lack and poverty continue to speak to us from the past.
We must guard ourselves from engaging in self-talk of doubt and lack. We must leave fearless and anxiety-free lives. Fear and anxiety open the doors for the enemy to sow doubt and discouragement into our hearts. Put off our old self and put on the new self who is unconditionally loved and accepted by God. Let the words of our mouth and our self-talk (the Bible calls this the meditations of our hearts) speak love, declare hope and proclaim faith to our spirit man daily.
“But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
