Reverend Lawrence Chen serves as Group Executive Pastor of New Life Restoration Churches, Malaysia (NLRC). He graduated with honours in Bachelor of Engineering, Monash University, Australia and Master of Ministry from Malaysia Bible Seminary. He studied theology and NT Greek at Ridley College, Melbourne.
He assists the Group Senior Pastor oversees the NLRC group’s full-time pastors and staff, providing vision, leadership, consultation and support to the churches. He directs the group finances, human resource and staff welfare, develops and implements policies and establishes growth structure and reproducible systems.
He has a strong passion for church planting, and gives hands-on leadership to NLRC group of churches. He started working with church planting teams when the Petaling Jaya Chinese church was launched in 1988. In 1991, he co-pioneered the first NLRC English outreach church at Shah Alam.
Lawrence was instrumental in launching the mission thrust in NLRC. His experience during a pioneering trip to Cambodia in 1994, moved him to initiate a NLRC mission fund to ‘Bless the Nations’. In the same year, he completed his graduate thesis on ‘Church Planting’ which earned him his Master degree.
Currently, he travels regularly to Cambodia, India, Japan, Myanmar, Russia, Thailand, and organizes mission support in 13 sponsored nations. He conducts pastors training in NLRC churches and regional mission hubs. He focuses on life-transforming discipleship, cell group dynamics and church planting among urban and indigenous people groups. He is editor of Channel M, the church’s in-house biannual mission magazine.
Lawrence has a mission gifting, is a clear thinker and capable implementer with an entrepreneurial acumen. His preaching is expository in nature and is often communicated with humor; drawing in real life experiences and exegetical insights. His bi-vocational status as an Executive Pastor and a Chartered Professional Engineer allows him to keep abreast with the marketplace. He enjoys golf, adventure and delights in a variety of cuisines.
Lawrence came to know the Lord in his teenage days and served as secretary of Inter-School Christ Ambassadors. After completing his studies in Australia, he returned to join Rev Dr Jeremiah Yap in March 1982. At that time the pioneering NLRC church in Malaysia was in its sixth month of commencement.
Lawrence is married to his university sweetheart, Lip Yee. They have three lovely children, Amy, Colin and Joanne.
